Why Your Toddler Wakes Up Too Early (And How to Fix It)

If your toddler is waking up at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m., despite your best efforts to adjust their bedtime, you’re not alone. Early wake-ups can be frustrating, especially when you’re already sleep-deprived as a parent. In this post, we’ll walk through the most common reasons why toddlers wake up early and explore practical solutions to help everyone in your family get the sleep they need.

1. Irregular Sleep Schedule

Consistency is key. When toddlers follow an inconsistent sleep schedule, their body clocks struggle to regulate wake-up times. A bedtime routine and consistent wake-up time will help set their internal clock.

Tip: Aim for your toddler’s bedtime to fall between 6:30-8:00 p.m.. Life is imperfect, but do the best you can, even on the weekends. 

2. Bedtime Is Too Late (Yes, Really!)

It may seem logical to push bedtime later in hopes your child will sleep in, but the opposite often happens. A later bedtime can leave children overtired, causing early morning wake-ups.

Tip: Try an earlier bedtime if your child wakes up too early. You can move to bedtime about 15 to 30 minutes earlier. The sweet spot is often between 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. for infants and toddlers.

3. Environmental Factors

Room conditions can make or break sleep. Excessive light, noise, or uncomfortable temperatures can disrupt your toddler’s rest. In summer, early sunrise may wake your little one too soon.

Solution: Use blackout curtains to block light and reduce environmental noise. Remove any small LED lights from devices like clocks or humidifiers.

4. Overstimulation and Overtiredness

If there’s too much time between your toddler’s last nap and bedtime, they may become overtired. Overtiredness sends stress hormones (like cortisol) coursing through their body, making it harder to fall and stay asleep.

Tip: For toddlers, the last nap should not end too far ahead of bedtime. If bedtime is more than about 5 hours from their last nap, you might have an overtired toddler.

5. Unintentional Rewards for Early Waking

Sometimes, toddlers wake up early because they associate morning wake-ups with rewards, like extra screen time or cuddles. While it’s tempting to soothe them with attention, this may encourage the behavior.

Tip: Instead of rewarding early wake-ups, try behavioral strategies like “practicing the pause.” Give them some time before attending to them to discourage habitual early risings.
