Sleep Problems in Kids: Ask a Pediatric Sleep Doctor

From sleep problems in infants to teenage sleep issues, there is a wide variety of sleep problems treated by a pediatric sleep specialist. Oftentimes, children may present with difficulty sleeping, which parents feel is related to troubles with their method of sleep training. After taking a detailed history and physical examination, a sleep doctor is able to arrive at a diagnosis that sometimes includes an underlying sleep disorder.

In this video, I talk about the different sleep problems that exist in children. This includes six different broad groups:

  • Hypersomnia

  • Insomnia

  • Parasomnia

  • Sleep-related breathing disorders

  • Sleep-related movement disorders

  • Circadian rhythm disorders

If you have concerns that your child has a sleep disorder, contact their pediatrician for evaluation and guidance on the next steps. This may require a referral to see a sleep medicine specialist!

Whether it's through a comprehensive sleep study or advice on how to help your child achieve more restful sleep, a pediatric sleep specialist can provide the expertise needed to ensure your child sleeps better and enjoys sound sleep. Don't hesitate to visit a sleep clinic or consult a sleep therapist to address any sleep-related issues.
