Ensuring children get a good night's sleep is crucial for their health, mood, and development. With the hustle and bustle of modern life, sleep problems are becoming increasingly common among kids. While there are many strategies to improve sleep, one natural approach that has gained popularity is the use of essential oils. In this blog, we'll explore how essential oils can help kids sleep, the four most common ones used for this purpose, how they work, and the potential side effects and cautions to keep in mind. Before we jump, it is my responsibility as a sleep expert to let you know that while this may boost sleep in kids, it will not fix your child’s sleep disorder.

How Essential Oils Work to Promote Sound Sleep

Essential oils are concentrated extracts from plants known for their aromatic properties. When used correctly, they can promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. The primary way essential oils work is through aromatherapy, where the scents are inhaled, stimulating the olfactory system and impacting the brain's limbic system, which controls emotions and memories. This process can induce a state of calm and relaxation, making it easier for children to achieve restful sleep and to sleep well. A few of these essential oils have been studied and shown to be safe for kids above 5 years of age.

The Four Most Common Essential Oils for Kids' Sound Sleep

Four aromatherapy oils have been determined to be both safe and effective for use with children over age 5: lavender, peppermint, orange, and ginger.

Lavender

Lavender is known for its calming and soothing properties. It helps reduce feelings of anxiousness and promotes relaxation, making it easier for children to drift off to sleep.

Use: A few drops of lavender oil can be added to a diffuser, a warm bath, or mixed with a carrier oil for a gentle bedtime massage.

Peppermint

Peppermint oil has a refreshing and invigorating scent that can help calm the mind and relax the body, making it easier to wind down for sleep.

Use: Peppermint oil can be diffused in the room or diluted with a carrier oil for a soothing chest or back rub before bedtime.

Orange

Orange oil has a sweet and uplifting aroma that helps reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a calm and happy environment conducive to sleep.

Use: Use orange oil in a diffuser or dilute it for topical application, such as a gentle foot or back massage.

Ginger

Ginger oil has warming and soothing properties that can help ease tension and promote a sense of comfort and relaxation, aiding in better sleep.

Usage: Diffuse ginger oil in the bedroom or dilute it with a carrier oil for a calming massage on the back or feet.

Potential Side Effects and Caution

While essential oils can be beneficial, it is important to use them safely, especially with children. Studies looking at safety profiles are limited but show there may be effects like nausea, vomiting and irritability in certain situation. I’ll reiterate that these oils are NOT a fix for your child’s sleep issues, but can potentially promote calmness and relaxation. This is why appropriate caution and discussion with your child’s health care provider is essential.

Key points to consider:

  1. Dilution: Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (like coconut or jojoba oil) before applying them to a child's skin. A general guideline is 1-2 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil.

  2. Age Appropriateness: The studies on these oils are used with children over the age of 5, as younger children may be more sensitive to their effects.

  3. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Always consult with your pediatrician, especially if your child has underlying health conditions or is taking other medications.

  4. Ingestion: Essential oils should never be ingested by children. They are potent and can cause serious harm if swallowed.

  5. Quality of Oils: Use high-quality, pure essential oils from reputable sources. Synthetic or adulterated oils can cause more harm than good.

Essential oils can potentially be a more natural way to help children relax and sleep better. Lavender, peppermint, orange, and ginger are among the most effective and commonly used oils for this purpose. While most of the research on these oils have looked at its effects in calming anxiety in children with conditions like pain or pre anesthesia, these benefits are also great for sleep. However, it is crucial to use them safely and responsibly. If your child has an underlying sleep issue, addressing this is essential.
